Meta Will Let Anyone Use Your Instagram Photos in AI; Opt Out Now

Reading Time: 2 minutes.

AI companies hate consent. They just hate the idea of you being able to say no before they force their junk on you. They sucked up data, music, movies, written word, everything from the internet and beyond, to make their plagiarism machines. They scan our faces everywhere we go. Some prick with Meta AI glasses taking pictures at the bar last night may have gotten me tagged in some facial recognition database Mark Zuckerberg uses to target us with ads. We can’t tell how much data they have on us because after they take it without consent, it’s “proprietary.” It feels like everyone without a shred of decency or sense is forcing AI on us.

AI only works without consent. Because if you had to consent to everything it requires, AI wouldn’t work. From land for data centers township officials and voters can’t say no to, all the way back to everything you’ve ever made, and every piece of information about you (readily available), AI needs you more than you need it, and therefore they have to take what they can without your consent. That’s probably why Meta keeps enabling new “features” that invade your privacy and expose you to their AI products, requiring you to find out about it later and opt out after the fact.

Right now, anyone can use Meta’s Muse image model to generate slop based on your Instagram photos. You won’t even be told when someone has done so. There are two ways to prevent this. First, is having a private profile. Obviously that’s not a possibility if you do any work in public with your account. Secondly, is a suspiciously hidden option in settings to opt out. Here’s how to find it.

Opt Out of the Slop Fest

Let’s jump right in to getting rid of this garbage Meta forced on us. Again.

  1. In Instagram, start by going to your profile.
  2. Tap the 3 bar menu in the top right
  3. Look to the “How others can interact with you” section
  4. Under it, if you haven’t disable the feature, you’ll see a “Sharing and Reuse” tab
  5. If you see a section labeled “Allow people to use your content on Instagram and with AI features on Meta” obviously toggle that off for both Posts and Reels
6. You may find a number of other AI and resharing options here to turn off

Scumbags Know to Avoid Consent

“No one’s name, image, likeness, voice, or creative work should be used by any third party, including AI models, without clear, documented consent. Artists deserve to decide if and how their likeness and work is used, with consent and the ability to set their own terms. This means letting creators impose restrictions, monitor usage, and prevent unauthorized endorsements or exploitation”

“Sharing and reuse” doesn’t feel like it would have anything to do with AI. And that’s the point. They took their standard sharing options that anyone has on their settings page and hid AI options in there so people concerned about their data and likeness being used in that way wouldn’t be able to find it as easily. They could have an “opt out of all AI button,” but you know damn well why they don’t.

No one in AI is putting consent first, and it’s very obvious what the kind of people who make these services are. These are all the same type of people. Greedy and needy. Their greed outweighs your health, your comfort, your labor, your autonomy, and your consent. Unfortunately, they run the world.

For now.
