Apple Announces iPhone Event Date

Apple Event invite, showing a looping Apple symbol and the date: September 15th, at 10am PDTApple today sent out invites to their annual iPhone event. Of course, it’ll be remote, but we’ll be able to tune in online. It’ll take place on September 15th, at 10am PDT (that’s 1pm on the east coast).

Apple’s expected to reveal the iPhone 12 as well as the Apple Watch Series 6 next Tuesday. We’ve also heard rumors about potential updates to the iPad Air as well as the Apple TV, though these are less certain. Apple often holds follow-up events in the fall for their larger-screened tech. Still, the Apple Watch and iPhone announcements often go together.

Tune in on Apple’s website next Tuesday to check out the event. Apple is expected to announce when the iPhone 12 will go on sale as well, though it’s possible that may not be for another month.

Expected Upgrades

For the iPhone, we can expect a larger and a smaller iPhone. The smallest full-screen iPhone in years could come alongside the largest. The iPhone 12 will come in a 5.4-inch screen size as well as continuing the 6.1-inch iPhone screen size we’ve seen in the iPhone 11. Expect the usual upgraded processors and cameras. Apple may also add OLED screens to their budget-friendly iPhone models.

The iPhone 12 Pro will supposedly get a LiDAR scanner, as well as 5G connectivity, though that may only come on the new 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max. The iPhone 12 Pro will replace the iPhone 11 Pro, however it will feature a 6.1-inch screen size, reducing the number of screen sizes and resolutions developers will have to support in the future.

The Apple Watch will likely get a new oxygen sensor, though current Apple Watches could also perform this functionality with a software upgrade. Little else is known about the Apple Watch, which could mean it’s a more “internal” update, with most of the new features coming in the form of internal hardware, not new form factors.

The iPad Air may get smart connector support and a new form factor, making it more like an iPad Pro. The Touch ID sensor may move to the power switch, giving it more space on the front for a large screen.

Stock of Apple’s Series 5 watches are low, suggesting an update could be immanent. It’s possible the Apple Watch and iPad Air have not faced the same delays as the iPhone, and could launch sooner than we expect the iPhone.

We’ll know more when Tim Cook and company take the stage during their socially distant event on the 15th.
