2019 iPhones May Have Larger Batteries and Bilateral Wireless Charging

Soon, you won’t need a separate device to do this. Reviews coming for both of these items soon! (Carved wireless charging pad and wireless AirPods case)

The primary feature Apple users ask of the next iPhone, time and time again, is a larger battery. We want more battery life. Apple, every year, ignores this plea. 2019 may be the first time they give us a significantly larger battery, but it won’t be for the reasons you think.

It’ll be to release a feature that’s found on Samsung’s latest Galaxy device as well. Bilateral wireless charging is the ability to both charge your phone wirelessly, then place something on top of your phone and charge that wirelessly. In the case of Apple, this will likely be the AirPods wireless charging case. That will surely make up for the early demise of AirPower.

The Rumor

Charging the Galaxy Buds is as easy as putting the case on your Samsung Galaxy S10 Phone

This rumor comes to us from none other than Ming-Chi Kuo, one of the most reliable Apple analysts making predictions about the future of Apple. He believes that all three iPhone models released in 2019 (upgrades to the iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and iPhone XS Plus) will feature bilateral charging. This means you’ll be able to charge your AirPods, other phones, and perhaps even your Apple Watch with your iPhone.

To make up for the additional strain this will place on your iPhone’s battery life, asking it to serve as a secondary power source, Apple will increase the battery life of the next iPhones. The 5.8″ iPhone XS successor will get a 20-25% increase in battery life. The 6.5″ iPhone, which already has decent battery life, will see a smaller jump, but a significant one, 10-15%. The most battery efficient version of the iPhone, the iPhone XR, will only see a small battery life bump, between nothing and 5%.

The Impact

Even if you don’t use your iPhone to charge anything else (which, face it, if you can do it, you will), you’ll enjoy the longer battery life. For the iPhone XS, it could be a few extra hours of use. If Apple can reduce the power consumption of the device in other ways, it could mean even more battery life. That’s the difference between your phone dying at the end of the day because you’ve been listening to music all day, and your phone lasting until the evening. It means you can rely on your phone to get you home safely if you need to call a car from a ride sharing app, pay for dinner with Apple Pay, or just keep you entertained on your evening commute.

Battery life has been the worst part about being an iPhone user. With the next iPhone, Apple will take its worst feature and significantly improve it. Perhaps we’ll get closer to the multi-day battery performance of well-designed Android phones.
