Apple released iOS 14.8 and macOS 11.6 today. The new updates protect users against the “zero click” hack famous for being part of the NSO Group’s hacking tools commonly known as “Pegasus.” This hack allowed them to access a device, steal data, and monitor devices without the user interacting with anything. A simple phone call, one you may not even answer, or text message could be enough to initiate the hack. Authoritarian governments used these tools, or tools exactly like them, to access journalists’ devices in an attempt to silence them. Apple’s fix will protect your iOS devices and your Mac.
You may not be a high profile target for anyone. But wouldn’t you be happier knowing this huge security flaw has been patched? It’ll take a few minutes, but go ahead and update now. You can go into Settings > General > Software Update on iOS, and System Preferences > Software Update in macOS. Also be sure to check the watch app and update your Apple Watch if you have one!
