Oh, Wait, Looks Like the Original Magic Keyboard Will Work with New iPad… Mostly

Reading Time: 2 minutes.

Silver iPad Pro in a white Magic KeyboardAccording to Apple, the original Magic Keyboard for the 12.9-inch iPad 12 won’t quite fit the new M1-powered iPad. However, that won’t stop it from being “functionally compatible.” Of course, we could have assumed that the iPad’s Smart Connectors would still line up properly, and therefore be “functionally compatible.” Still, we thought it wouldn’t work at all with the new iPad. According to Apple, it can still close, just not precisely. Also, adding a screen protector is enough to throw off the fitment even more.

The fitment may be a little too tight for most users’ comfort.

Apple’s Guidance

The first generation of the Magic Keyboard (A1998) is functionally compatible with the new iPad Pro 12.9-inch (5th generation) with Liquid Retina XDR display. Due to the slightly thicker dimensions of this new iPad Pro, it’s possible that the Magic Keyboard may not precisely fit when closed, especially when screen protectors are applied.

It seems users will still prefer the new Magic Keyboard. Many people with an iPad Pro use it for drawing or writing. Those who do may also like having a matte screen protector, to improve the feeling of using the Apple Pencil. Adding that may prevent the Magic Keyboard from closing on your 12.9-inch iPad Pro properly. The 11-inch model is still unaffected.

We won’t know for sure until reviewers get their hands on the new 12.9-inch M1 iPad Pro and can test it with the old Magic Keyboard. Apple says it’ll work, but it just won’t fit well. That alone may convince some buyers to hold off on buying another Magic Keyboard until they have a chance to test the fitment. After all, it’s more expensive than most of my mechanical keyboards. And who would be crazy enough to spend $350 on new keyboards every few months?

I plead the fifth.
