I Like My New Hand Washing Coach

Reading Time: 2 minutes.

Apple webpage showing countdown timer as well as text stating that your Apple Watch can remind you to wash your hands when you get home. Often, it takes a while to notice the new features of a watchOS update. With watchOS 7, I noticed the complications selection pages were different. I haven’t otherwise noticed much of a difference. But I remembered something yesterday. Isn’t my watch supposed to tell me when I’ve washed my hands for the required 20 seconds to kill COVID-19 and other germs? So I went into settings. Yes, it is! But it’s turned off by default. I turned it on.

Twinkle, Twinkle, E, F, G…

The only song I can play from memory on piano is “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.” I know, that’s sad. What’s more sad is grown adult singing the song twice in their head to make sure they’ve washed their hands for an appropriate amount of time. You can also sing the ABC’s. They use the same tune. Just don’t skimp on “L, M, N, O, P.” It’s not “elemeno-pee.”

With the Apple Watch, I just start washing my hands. I don’t have to start slowly counting to 20 in my head, my Apple Watch will do it. It’ll give me a slight tap on my wrist when it notices I’m washing my hands, and another tap when I can stop. It’ll even stop counting down if it notices I’m not moving my hands enough. It’s been accurate. It may take a few seconds to identify when I’m washing my hands, but the countdown timer will start at 17 if it took 3 seconds to be sure you’re washing your hands. The most I’ve seen it take so far has been 5 seconds.

Listen, you can’t have someone hold your hand during hand washing. But, as it turns out, you can have someone hold your wrist. It’s an absolutely ridiculous feature, but, honestly? It works. And it gives you some peace of mind when you realize you can’t tell how long you’ve been absentmindedly washing your hands.

Remember folks, the only way to beat this virus is to reduce contact to that which is only absolutely necessary, always wear a mask in public or even around house mates if you’ve been out in public or potentially exposed, and wash your hands for at least 20 seconds. Also, don’t touch your face so much.

We can beat this thing, and now your Apple Watch can help.

watchOS 7 is out now. You can update from the Watch app on your iPhone.
