Jon Prosser’s Apple Glass Prediction Doesn’t Sound Realistic Anymore

Reading Time: 2 minutes.

Steve Jobs announcing the first iPhone

Prosser, of Front Page Tech, leaked a large amount of information supposedly from numerous leakers within Apple. He had the iPhone SE launch date correct, as well as the 13-inch MacBook Pro. His latest predictions gave hope of an “Apple Glass” device Apple would reveal later this year. While this seemed like an advanced timeline, it wasn’t completely unreasonable. After all, Apple usually reveals a product, spends a few months putting the finishing touches on it, and releases it 3-6 months later. It’s what they did for every major new product category. However, his latest prediction for Apple Glass not only sounds unrealistic, but throws all of his other Apple Glass predictions into question.

Jon Prosser claimed on a Cult of Mac Podcast episode on Thursday that Apple is making a “Steve Jobs Heritage Edition” version of the Apple AR glasses. Suddenly, I doubt everything he’s ever said, including the release dates that ended up correct. Are we sure the iPhone SE exists? I’m not anymore.

The “Steve Jobs Heritage Edition” Apple Glass Rumor

According to Jon Prosser, Apple is working on a special “Steve Jobs Heritage Edition” of the Apple AR glasses, which he says will be called Google Apple Glass. These glasses will be in the shape of the deceased Apple co-founder’s iconic glasses. Never mind where the electronics would go on such a shape. He claims this would be like the $10,000 gold Apple Watch Edition that Apple sold for the first Apple Watch, kind of a first generation boost to get celebrities and influencers talking about the new tech.

The lenses would be circular, just like Steve Jobs’ (and John Lennon’s) glasses. Other than that, they’d have the same features of the other Apple Glass AR glasses.

Bunk. Total Bunk.

Apple named their on-campus theater after Steve Jobs. That makes sense. It’s normal to do a tribute to someone with a building, and the man was a showman. His product presentations were legendary. Naming the theater after him where the company he co-founded will announce new products is a fitting tribute.

Selling something with his name on it is cheap and, frankly, gaudy and opportunistic. It’s just not Apple. Furthermore, his infamous frames just wouldn’t work well for augmented reality. I just can’t see Apple tarnishing Steve Jobs’ name with a product like this.

Furthermore, noted leaker Mark Gurman, who reports for Bloomberg, stated that the leak was “complete fiction.” He says in a later tweet that there may be some confusion, as there are multiple models coming out. Gurman claims that Apple will reveal a combined AR/VR headset in 2021, and released in 2022. Then, a separate version, purely AR, would release in 2023. That last model would be the AR glasses that Prosser spoke of. Gurman took the time to state that Prosser’s leaks haven’t been close to true.

This fall, we’ll likely see the introduction of the iPhone 12. Maybe a new Apple Watch. We’ll see iOS 14 for the first time in June. But the Apple Glasses? We may have to wait until next year if Gurman is to be believed. As for when we’ll see the Steve Jobs Apple Glasses? My guess is never. In fact, this sounds like one of the false rumors Apple puts out to figure out who their leakers are. Apple employees feeding information to Prosser may have just ensured Apple knows exactly who they are.
