Did Apple finally make an iPhone that doesn’t need a case?
No, of course not, silly. Want to watch a few iPhones shatter though? Check out SquareTrade’s video below. They wreck a few iPhones and are surprised to find one survived one of their toughest tests.
SquareTrade’s Testing
SquareTrade does this every year, with a number of smartphones. They sell insurance for smartphones, so it’s in their best interests to show you just how fragile your devices really are. Still, their tests are well controlled. They have to be, they likely use these scores to calculate how much to sell insurance for.
Did they show a more common 3′ drop? No, the iPhone might not break at that height. But they at least standardized their 6′ drop. The iPhone broke at this height in all cases, but how often do you drop your phone from 6′ in the air? It just doesn’t seem as realistic as a simulated “hip level” drop.
All of that aside, phones are still fragile, and still need cases or insurance. But SquareTrade’s testing shows that the iPhone 11 Pro, the 5.8″ model, is the toughest iPhone ever. The iPhone 11 is a little less durable, and the iPhone 11 Pro Max is far less durable.
It’s almost as though smaller devices that have less glass area, have smaller, sturdier frames, weigh less, and hit the ground with less force, are more durable. Shocking, I know.
Just a reminder, Leaf and Core will be sharing a 1 month review of the iPhone 11 in October! Stay tuned!
