How to Hide Photos on iOS 12

Reading Time: 2 minutes.

You probably have a photo or two on your iPhone that you don’t want anyone to see. Perhaps it’s an intimate photo? Maybe it’s a photo of your family you keep for sentimental reasons, despite looking like a dork in it. Maybe it’s just a really bad selfie.

Oh, yeah. That selfie that makes you look like your average Philadelphia hockey fan. We’ve got to hide that one! So how do we do that? Fortunately, the Photos app in iOS 12 will allow us to hide that weird photo without deleting it.

First, open the Photos app and find the photo you want to hide. If you want to hide multiple photos, tap select, then tap the photos you want to hide. If you’re just hiding one image, you can either tap it or tap select then tap the single image.

Next, tap the share button. I know what you’re thinking, you absolutely positively do not want to share this image. Who could blame you?

Aw, I’m sorry, Gritty, I’ll stop. You’re doing great, Gritty.

After tapping share, swipe through the actions.

Finally, tap “Hide,” then “Hide Photo.”

Now no one will know what you look like in the morning before you’ve brushed your hair and finished your makeup. The images will still be on your phone though. Unfortunately, Apple hasn’t provided you any way to prevent people from looking at these images. Sorry. However, they will be hidden from your camera roll. Therefore, if you’re importing photos onto a computer, or showing your friend something on your phone, you won’t have to dread them accidentally finding your hidden photos.

If you do want to find those photos, just tap Albums, scroll to the bottom, and tap hidden. You’ll find all the images you’ve hidden from your Camera Roll. Hopefully, Apple will one day allow us to lock these away as we can some notes in the Notes app, using a password or Face ID to unlock the images. Then we could be really certain no one would see us at our worst.
