Every year, phone companies try to capitalize on the absurdity of iPhone releases. Samsung has mocked Apple fanatics standing in line for the new iPhone for years. To be fair, Apple fandom can sometimes be cult-like, and there’s a lot to mock. But Samsung’s ads have always fallen flat, as have other attempts to market to those waiting in line for the new iPhone.
But Huawei had a different idea. As the old saying goes, “You catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar.” Instead of attacking those willing to line up for the new iPhone, Huawei extended an olive branch, with a cheeky note about battery life.
A Gift and a Clear Message
Huawei handed out 200 10,000mAh power banks to Apple fanatics waiting in line at a Singapore Apple Store. Battery packs are frequently used by heavy smartphone users who fear running out of battery life during the day. I actually carry a small one with me everywhere I go, and it has saved my butt on more than one occasion.
However, Huawei took the opportunity to point out that the Huawei P20 Pro has a larger battery than even the iPhone XS Max, and typically longer battery life. The Huawei P20 Pro has a 4,000mAh battery, while the iPhone XS has a 2,659mAh battery and the iPhone XS Max has a 3,179mAh battery. Apple might be more efficient with its battery usage, but those small batteries can only do so much. Apple users frequently complain about battery life.
Those 200 people who got their battery packs from Huawei are definitely going to be thankful to have the extended battery life. I doubt anyone jumped out of line to go buy a Huawei P20 Pro, but they might consider Huawei more favorably in a few years when they go to purchase their next smartphone. Clever, Huawei!
