No Headphone Jack Dongle, 5W USB-A: A Poorly Planed iPhone XS

Reading Time: < 1 minute.
The iPhone XS with lightning headphones, a lightning to USB-A cable, and a puny 5W charger

What’s in the box? Just this.

When you open the box of a new iPhone, you should be excited and delighted. Instead, the new iPhone XS and XS Max will disappoint users. That’s because they may have paid more for their iPhone XS than any phone before it, and what they’re left with is a disappointing array of accessories. Apple will not include the $9 headphone jack dongle in the box for any new iPhone this year. The charger Apple includes is the same one they always have, the compact 5W USB charger. The cable that comes with it is a Lighting to USB-A cable.

To recap: Apple abandoned the headphone jack, but they won’t give you a headphone jack dongle to help you use your high-end headphones with your high-end iPhone. Apple abandoned USB-A in their MacBook lineup, but if you want to connect your brand new iPhone XS to your brand new MacBook Pro, you’ll need a separately purchased ($20) dongle. And, you just dropped over $1,000 to get a phone that doesn’t come with a quick charger, as Android flagship phone does.

Apple didn’t do much for the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Plus. The phones are a little after, and take slightly better photos. Face ID is slightly faster (but still not landscape). It now comes in gold. Let’s face it, the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Plus might be the worst values Apple has ever thrust upon us. Apple’s giving their users less. They’re giving us outdated cables. The charger can’t even rapidly charge the phone.

Apple’s trying to test how fanatical their fans really are. I think they’ll be pleased.
