Apple has a number of assets in their software to depict the devices it’s running on. Usually, they’re good at scrubbing these icons from their beta software before releasing it to the public, but they make mistakes. In fact, leaks originating from iOS software betas seem to be on the rise.
The new iPad clearly has far smaller bezels, but still has room for the FaceID sensor. Though a camera is not depicted in the icon, Apple once again revealed that FaceID would be coming to the new iPad. As Guilherme Rambo discovered, Apple added a new option for the iPad to use “PearlUnlock,” Apple’s internal code name for FaceID in iOS 12.

Hopefully FaceID has landscape functionality. I use my iPad every day, and I almost never use it in portrait orientation. The idea that I’d have to unlock my iPad and then twist it to the correct orientation is crazy. Of course, if it only works in landscape mode, that would also be annoying.
The next iPad Pro could be the iPhone X of iPads, without the ugly notch and portrait-only FaceID. Apple will likely release it this fall.
