Blue, red, gold, and orange iPhone X concepts

I was sad when Apple decided not to make a (RED) iPhone X. Red is a fabulous, brilliant color (one of my favorites) and the proceeds go to a great cause. I had to settle on a Product(RED) iPhone X case, which, while it’s nice, it’s not the same as a stunningly beautiful red finish. Perhaps that’s why I still stare at my beautiful HTC U11 on occasion, thinking about what could have been. If only Apple wanted to make a pretty iPhone.

If famed analyst Ming-Chi Kuo is right, Apple is finally preparing to make the iPhone pretty. Unfortunately, like the last time Apple graced us with vibrancy, it’ll be limited to Apple’s budget model again.

New Colors

Ming-Chi Kuo believes Apple will release 3 new iPhone models this year. There will be a sequel to the iPhone X, which will be the base high-end model, to replace the iPhone 8. There will also be a “plus” size of this phone, a 6.5″ OLED iPhone with Face ID. Finally, there will be a 6.1″ LCD “budget” iPhone, likely with Face ID. It’s this model that Apple will focus on for their new colors.

The iPhone X sequel models will get a white, black, and new gold finish. That’s pretty standard fare. The gold will be a new shade, one we haven’t seen before, but it won’t be much different than any other gold color we’ve already seen. In fact, it might look like the “copper gold” or “blush gold” that the iPhone X was rumored to come in.

The “budget” iPhone will see a greater variety of colors. Kuo claims this iPhone will come in grey, white, blue, red, and orange. That grey may be a “space gray” shade. This will be Apple’s truly colorful lineup, with the vibrant colors Apple saves for their budget iPhones.

A Colorful History

Apple has done this before with budget iPhones. The iPhone 5c was Apple’s first phone to feature an all-plastic back, as well as a variety of colors. It came in a bright lime green, blue, yellow, pink, and white. Apple also sold fun cases that showed off the underlying design of these phones. That was 5 years ago. Apple hasn’t released anything that fun or colorful since.

It’s a shame Apple still leaves color to their budget models. Apple likely believes it cheapens their brand, but, looking at other high-end smartphones with vibrant colors and glass backs makes me think Apple’s wrong. Phones can be elegant and beautiful as well as colorful. Maybe one day Apple will agree.
