KGI analyst Ming Chi Kuo revealed that he expects Apple to release three new iPhones in 2018. There will be the sequel to the 5.7″ iPhone X, a new, larger 6.5″ iPhone X sequel iPhone XI Plus, being the most logical and worst name), and a new, low cost 6.1″ iPhone, with only one camera on the rear. The low cost iPhone, according to Kuo, will have an LCD screen, while the other two models will have low-energy OLED displays, like the iPhone X and Apple Watch.
And, yes, all models will have a notch.
Three New iPhones
The renders above are based on the schematics leaked by Russian site Wylsa.com. These renders include all sides of the new larger iPhone Plus and the budget single camera model. It’s possible, then, that Apple may not release a premium upgrade to the 5.7″ model.
Apple may also release an update to the iPhone SE, giving it a larger screen and a glass back in the same iPhone 5-based body. This would be four new iPhones released in 2018. This is untested waters for Apple. Apple keeps their product lineup simple, they don’t like to confuse customers with a large catalog of devices. Apple prefers to split products up into one for professionals, and one for regular consumers. This is like the MacBook and MacBook Pro, the iMac and the Mac Pro, and the iPhone with the iPhone Plus. The 6.1″ model could replace the current iPhone SE, which would likely disappoint the users who prefer a small phone.
WWDC may be tomorrow, but we’re not expecting updates to Apple’s hardware lineup. WWDC is for developers, and will mostly reveal software. Apple will update iOS, macOS, and reveal new development tools. We should not expect hardware updates. However, by September, we should know more about Apple’s plans for the iPhone.
