iPhone SE Coming in May?

Reading Time: < 1 minute.

After last week’s EEC leak, it seemed obvious that a new iPhone SE was coming soon, but we didn’t know anything else about it. Now we may have a few more details. Macotakara spoke to iPhone case manufacturers at the Global Sources Mobile Electronics tradeshow in Hong Kong. They claim they heard a few common descriptions of the upcoming iPhone SE. The good news is, if you have a current iPhone SE case, you likely won’t have to buy a new one. The bad news is, well, it’s the same piece of news, only without a headphone jack.

Yes, as you can tell from my hastily edited renders above, the iPhone SE 2 will not have a headphone jack. Presumably Apple will claim this is to increase the iPhone SE’s already phenomenal battery life, or perhaps to add the Taptic Engine. It seems the device will get an A10 Fusion chip (not the latest A11 Bionic chip), but will support HEIF and HEVC formats, for high efficiency and high quality images and video.

Beyond that, the device will largely remain the same. It likely won’t force touch, although there’s always the possibility of it. Also, it’s unlikely Apple will increase the screen size. It’s a shame, a device the size of the iPhone SE with a bezel-less display would be fantastic, but likely too expensive to manufacture. We also don’t yet know if it’ll have a glass back, enabling wireless charging. However, the general consensus was the same: expect Apple top reveal this in May. May, with its warm weather and iPhone SE 2 updates can’t get here fast enough.
