When Apple released the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, making 4.7″ the minimum screen size for a new iPhone, most people were ecstatic. Finally, Apple was catching up to phone makers who had released larger smartphones years ago. No more viewing apps on a tiny screen, constant scrolling to read an article, or holding a phone close to watch a video. Still, some weren’t impressed. They didn’t like the fact that the iPhone 6 couldn’t easily be used with one hand. The screen was just too large to be comfortable, even with reachability. These people refused to upgrade, and began looking elsewhere.
Before Apple lost many customers or disappointed the ones they had, the company released a new smartphone, the iPhone SE. The iPhone SE had the performance and camera of the iPhone 6s, then the flagship iPhone model, but in the body of an iPhone 5s. People loved it. Apple’s pocket friendly, handheld device was back.
However, a year passed with no update. The iPhone 7 was released, and now the iPhone 8 and iPhone X. iPhone SE fans have been scared of losing their favorite handset. But a leak from the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) shows Apple is planning on releasing a new iPhone in the upcoming weeks, and it’ll likely be a new iPhone SE.
The EEC
If the EEC sounds familiar, there’s no surprise there. A few weeks ago, the regulatory commission was in the news for leaking the existence of new iPad models. Two weeks later, Apple held an education event and released the new iPad with Apple Pencil support. Electronics companies need to get the permission of the EEC before selling products in a number of Eurasian countries, including Russia. If history is any indicator, we can expect the iPhone SE 2 within two weeks.
The iPhone SE 2
Rumors for the iPhone SE 2 haven’t been very clear yet. Some point to an iPhone X-like design, in a smaller form factor, though that’s highly unlikely. More likely is that Apple will re-use the iPhone SE design. They’ll upgrade the camera and add an A10 or possibly the A11 Bionic processor (the processor from the iPhone 8 and iPhone X). Rumors have stated that Apple will continue to skip 3D Touch for the iPhone SE 2, but will add a glass back to the SE 2 design for wireless charging. Fortunately, we’ll only have to wait a few weeks to find out. Apple hasn’t sent out event invites yet, but we’ll likely see those around this time next week.
