So you heard that a long, alphanumeric (letters, numbers, and symbols) passcode is the most secure type of iPhone passcode. However, typing that in can be a drag. When you set an alphanumeric passcode, you’re presented with Apple’s full keyboard to enter your passcode. This isn’t as easy to type on in a hurry. So what if you want more than 6 digits, but still want to use just numbers?
It’s not the default option, but it’s easy! Here’s how.
Creating a New Passcode
Let’s start off with how to create a new passcode, since you’re likely not reading this while setting up a new iPhone.
- Open Settings
- Scroll down to Touch ID and Passcode (Face ID and Passcode on the iPhone X)
- Enter your existing passcode, if you have one
- You’ll be presented with the new passcode dialog
Making a Stronger Passcode
The way to do this before iOS 11 was to tap Passcode Options and select “Custom Alphanumeric Code.” Then, you’d just enter numbers. When the passcode screen would come up, it would have numbers rather than a full keyboard.
Fortunately, Apple realized how popular this workaround was, and made an easier method.
- Tap Passcode Options
- Select Custom Numeric Code
- Enter as many digits as you want
- Re-enter your new passcode
- And you’re done!
A longer passcode isn’t just more difficult to guess, it’s also more difficult for hackers to get into. So, if you think you may be in danger of that, or you just use your iOS device for important items, consider protecting your device with a passcode that’s at least 10 digits long.
