Apple Needs to Lay Off the Windex

Reading Time: < 1 minute.

Apple’s new campus has a problem. When designing the new Apple “spaceship” campus, architects made sure to blend it into its surroundings. A huge open courtyard in the middle, giant panes of glass, and natural climate control that makes use of the wind make the stark building both contrast and blend with its surroundings. Perhaps it’s blending a little too well.

Apple employees couldn’t stop walking into the walls.

Those glass walls are a little hard to see…

Apple called 911 at least three times to report people walking into the glass walls. This was likely a precautionary/insurance measure; none of the cases required immediate emergency attention. Apple has since placed rectangular stickers around eye level to reduce the odds of someone walking into the glass. Considering the fact that every Apple product still comes with at least one Apple sticker, something tells me Apple can get their hands on plenty of stickers.

Looking at the photo above, I can understand why someone—especially someone with their head in a phone—could walk into the glass walls. The ceiling is high and the panes are large, meaning a person might not see the borders of the building clearly. Small white rectangles on the glass might not look great, but protect people from injuries. Fortunately, it seems as though no one was seriously injured, so it’s okay if you laughed a little.

If you’d like, you can check out the transcripts and one recording from one of these incidents on the San Francisco Chronicle.
